Tropical Storm Nepartak heads toward Japan and the Olympic Games

Tokyo is bracing for Tropical Storm Nepartak, which has already begun to disrupt some Olympic events. The storm developed late Friday, local time and is heading toward the island nation.

Forecasts call for enhanced rain, winds and rough surf to impact areas to the north of Tokyo Monday night into Tuesday night, local time. Gusty rain showers could continue to impact the Olympic Games into Wednesday. The impact to Tokyo and its surrounding areas are forecast to be minor, and more rain is expected around Sendai, which is about 225 miles north of Tokyo.

While there is still a lot of uncertainty regarding the storm, including its path and intensity, it’s not expected to strengthen into a typhoon at this time, according to weather officials.

Strong quake and flooding rains hit the Philippines An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck Calatagan, Batangas on Saturday and was felt in neighboring provinces in Southern Luzon and even in metro Manila. Local officials reported that the earthquake was deep so there is no threat of tsunami, although there is warning of aftershocks.

Meanwhile, heavy monsoon rain, compounded by a tropical storm, flooded Manila and nearby provinces — causing thousands to evacuate. Local officials report that some houses were flooded up to their roofs. Floods and landslides made 64 roads impassable in metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa and Cordillera regions. Fifty-seven areas are without power, and seven franchise areas are without mobile communication service.
